1 Medium onion, diced

4 cloves garlic, minced/pressed

1/2 tsp dried oregano

5 oz. tomato paste

1 Tbsp beef base

28oz can crushed tomatoes

4 cups water (you may not need it all)

2tsp granulated sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

3Tbsp fresh basil, chopped (1 T. Dried)

Pinch Dried Red Pepper Flakes

1 lb. dried spaghetti (broken in half)

1/2c grated parmesan

Large Dutch Oven

Directions

Heat a dutch oven or large pot with a lid over medium heat. Add a bit of oil, the ground beef, and sausage. Break the meat up as it cooks. Cook away all the excess moisture that comes out.

When meat begins to really brown and is well broken down, stir in onion and garlic, making sure to scrape up any meat fond stuck to the bottom of the pot. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 425F/220C.

Uncover and stir in the spices and tomato paste. Cook for a minute or so until tomato paste is well incorporated.

Stir in beef base, can of crushed tomatoes and 3/4 of the water. Bring to a simmer, adjust as needed to keep it there.

Add in spaghetti and gently stir and press down to submerge noodles.

Cover the pot and cook for 10 minutes.

Add water if needed. Stir, make sure the noodles are submerged, cover, and cook for another 10 minutes.

Uncover, check for doneness. Taste seasoning and adjust if necessary. Add water if needed. Simmer until done, stirring frequently.

Stir in grated parmesan.

Serve and top with additional parmesan.
